AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ryhope? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Ryhope, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has been run. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Ryhope, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not bin it away.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting SR2 0, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the car.

Don't do these:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Viewforth Road.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Moving your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Ryhope forecourt you are on, the Asda included. On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. When your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Northlea last night and not started stays the simple case, as long as no one touches your key.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out. A vehicle left standing in Ryhope with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Ryhope

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in New Silksworth or the middle of Ryhope.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever across Tyne and Wear the car sits.

Ryhope: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Mostly it is not the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Rushing, outside St Paul's CofE Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle. Someone pours the container in at home, just off Stillington Close, as the day ends. Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Guide Post, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — rentals, new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuel types. Wherever around Tyne and Wear, Ryhope as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ryhope, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, perhaps part way across Ryhope or returning from Meadow Park. When you safely can, stop and turn everything off — without restarting to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the A1(M), under 10 miles from Ryhope, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards Sunderland, under 3 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Ryhope to the car park by Ryhope Engines Museum. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after your engine has been run. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's caught soon.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Ryhope

A road beside Ryhope Rent Office, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Ryhope, our technicians travel to it. Which fluid got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is emptied, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash out by itself. Next, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of the car. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, provided the motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Lastly, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, at Seaham or on a drive in Ryhope. The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Ryhope?

Because each callouts differ, a single price wouldn't be fair. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind St Paul's Church.

That is why each call from Ryhope starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run. Given them, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

The price is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
