Rylands: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
Motor off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor pulls it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Rylands. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.
Rylands, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once
Do:
- Pocket the keys, which stops anyone turning the power on.
- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NG9 1, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.
Things not to do:
- Moving the car just a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
- Switching the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.
- Even a short distance along Victory Road is too far to drive it.
- By the road, don't try draining it yourself.
Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your car off the island if you're on a forecourt in Rylands, whether it is the Texaco or elsewhere. If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.
What AdBlue does in a diesel tank
Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.
Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Attenborough last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.
It causes two kinds of damage from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; and, since it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. A vehicle left standing around Rylands with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse
A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco. Blended into the diesel and left still, it is harmless for now; running the engine is the damage.
AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Rylands or out in Clifton, does more harm than nearly any other error.
As with petrol, there is good news. Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, wherever the vehicle has stopped in Nottinghamshire.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Rylands?
Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two may look identical. Nobody means it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.
It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside Beeston Rylands Junior School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle. A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Lavender Grove, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Jolly Anglers, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.
It crops up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the other car in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers use the least. Keep it switched off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Rylands or the rest of Nottinghamshire you are.
Rylands: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.
You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Leyton Crescent Recreation Ground or halfway across Rylands. When safe, pull over then switch it off — with no turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of that through.
If you were on the M1, under 5 miles from Rylands, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.
A quick hop across Rylands to the car park by Masjid Taybah is one thing; driving towards Nottingham, under 5 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been running. Lasting damage is very rare when it is noticed quickly.
Rylands: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel
Anywhere it has stopped around Rylands — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street by Sri Thurkkai Amman Temple — our van travels to the vehicle. Which fluid got in, about how much, plus if your motor has turned over: our engineers check before all else, since those decide the work.
Then the tank is cleared where your car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't clear away by itself. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel. Whether it is a parking bay by Beeston or a drive in Rylands, that is where our engineers start the engine and you drive off. It is checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we leave. No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains in Rylands and across Nottinghamshire
Beeston, Chilwell and Lenton Abbey are among the places near Rylands that the same vans serve, along with much of Nottinghamshire beyond, throughout the NG postcode area. Near a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.
Anywhere your vehicle sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — we empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Rylands, a residential suburb, well.
What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Rylands?
Because the callouts differ, a flat figure would not be honest. What moves the price is, first, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Beeston Rylands Community Association.
Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus whether the engine ran: every Rylands call opens by asking exactly those, before any quote, never after. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.
Before a van heads out, you are told the quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Check your policy whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
Rylands: still next to the car?
Then, do nothing — that's the most helpful move there is. Keys out, engine off, ignition off. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Rylands or anywhere in Nottinghamshire, once you call 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
