AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Saltaire? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off then leave the ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The harm starts once it's pulled through your lines — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel. In Saltaire, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Saltaire

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, which prevents anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can see.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BD18 4, or whatever street is closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Do not:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a short way is no reason to start the motor.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's pointless.
  • Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Kendall Avenue.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Saltaire forecourt you're on, the Shell included. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it treats the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Shipley overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through once the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Saltaire leaves things worse. In the tank alone, time costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the BP, and this problem is thinned fuel. No damage comes while it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Nab Wood or the centre of Saltaire alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around West Yorkshire the car has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Saltaire

It's not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. Usually it's not the filling station: a driver buys a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Saltaire Primary School. After work, a container goes in on a drive near Richmond Mews. Otherwise, in dim light by Klubhaus, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet motor, or the spare car of a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use the least. Wherever in West Yorkshire, Saltaire as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Saltaire, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the filter and pipework.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Round Wood or halfway across Saltaire. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave it off rather than testing it again. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M606, under 5 miles from Saltaire, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving for Bradford, under 5 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Saltaire to the car park by St. Peter's. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Spotted early, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

Saltaire: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Saltaire: a side street close to Saltaire World Heritage Site, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, plus if the motor has been run: we ask first, since those decide the work.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Saltaire or in a space by the nearest station. It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs properly before our engineers head off. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Saltaire?

Every job differs, and so not one fixed price would be fair. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight spot behind Saltaire Methodist Church.

Before a quote, not after, every enquiry from Saltaire begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran. Given them, a range narrows to one firm figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
