Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Saron

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Saron. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Saron

To do:

  • Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.
  • Call right where you are. Say a LL55 1 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the vehicle: your motor stays off.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
  • Even a short way along Stryd Bellaf is too far to drive it.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Saron forecourt you are on, the Essar or any other. At home, the car stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — quite unlike fuel. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its supply from. A motor filled on a drive in Y Wern overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but once the engine runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. A vehicle left standing in Saron with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. And there's the water: it offers no protection to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole fault. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Fachell or the middle of Saron.

The same good news applies as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Gwynedd your car is sitting.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Saron: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. Mostly it's not the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried. Close to B4366, someone tips a container in on the drive after work. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Gors Bach Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles get it the most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the spare car of a home with both fuel types. Keep it switched off: that's the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Saron or the rest of Gwynedd you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Saron?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the filter, along the lines, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may show up, perhaps part way across Saron or coming back from CPD Bethel FC. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the Moreton Spur, under 50 miles from Saron, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Saron to the car park by St Deiniol's is one matter; heading for Bangor, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has ended up. When it's noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Saron: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road near Greenwood Family Park, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Saron, and the van comes to it. What was put in, roughly the quantity, plus if your motor has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, because those shape the work.

Then the tank is cleared where your car stands, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't clear away on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the system is primed with clean diesel. Whether it is a parking space at Llanfairpwll or a drive around Saron, that is where our technicians start the engine and you drive off. Before we go, our technicians check it's running smoothly with new diesel in. Since the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Saron: the cost of fixing it

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Eglwys y Santes Fair.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, every call from Saron opens with three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if the engine ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
