AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Scarborough? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Scarborough. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Scarborough: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a YO11 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Never do these:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance down Westborough.
  • Emptying the tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

At a forecourt in Scarborough, whether it is the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car away from the pump. At home, the vehicle remains exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Northstead last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; and, because it eats at some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. A motor left standing in Scarborough with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Scarborough

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Penny Petrolium's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the main problem. Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting inside that tank, it causes nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Scarborough or out in Prospect Mount, costs more than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever your vehicle has stopped in North Yorkshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Scarborough: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up while heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. The refill is hurried outside Friarage Community Academy, because the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken in. Someone tips the bottle in at home, just off Vernon Road, as the day ends. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside The Lord Rosebery, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be in Scarborough or the rest of North Yorkshire.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Scarborough?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may show up, maybe part way across Scarborough or coming back from Crescent Gardens. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the Petuaria Way, under 50 miles from Scarborough, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That is why crossing Scarborough to park near Scarborough Library and a drive of under 50 miles towards York are such different jobs. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's noticed soon.

Scarborough: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has stopped in Scarborough — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Brunswick Shopping Centre — our van travels to the car. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has turned over: our engineers ask first, because those decide the job.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because residue will not wash away by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a driveway around Scarborough. Before we leave, we make sure it is running properly with fresh diesel in. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains around Scarborough and across North Yorkshire

Scarborough is a coastal town, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Scarborough

Because the jobs differ, a flat figure would not be fair. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Balmoral Centre.

Ahead of any quote, not after, each call from Scarborough opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, and whether the engine ran. Those replies shrink a range right down to one number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
