AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Scriven: What Now?

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: if the engine has been run since it went in. Out in Knaresborough or right in Scriven, an unstarted motor should remain unrun. Normally this means draining and properly flushing it right there around Scriven — so leave your key and engine off and ring 0333 366 0103. Where your motor has been run, stop somewhere safe straight away, then turn it off. It's a larger job, yet stage one does not change.

Below: the cases our engineers see, anywhere across North Yorkshire. Choose the one that fits.

On a Scriven forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Just now, bottle still in your hand, it dawns on you that the cap you took off was the wrong one, right at the petrol pump. Be it Asda, Tesco or anywhere else in Scriven, the case is identical.

Put simply: there is no better place to be to spot it. No pump has drawn it in, so the AdBlue stays only inside that tank.

Freeing the pump is no reason to run it — and so do not get back in. Ask the attendants to help you push the car into a parking space, keep the receipt or the bottle, then call us from the forecourt. Can't move the car by the petrol pump? Our explosion-proof kit makes a busy forecourt safe, and so we can drain the car in place.

Scriven, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Several days had gone by with the warning light on. Bought a container, tipped it in at home, recycled the empty — and only then looked at the cap a second time, after the fact. It happens on driveways just off Coney Garth View as often as anywhere.

The point: no miles since leaves it almost equal to spotting it at the pump. As it is unable to mix, AdBlue drops low inside the tank and stays. A night standing alters nothing.

Next: the keys in the house, so no one takes your car off at breakfast. After that, phone. In New Scriven or right here in Scriven, the drain happens on your drive. Even at night, the pumps are quiet enough for a residential street.

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel in Scriven?

Lumpy running, smoke, falling power or a lit dashboard started a short way after the fill. Somewhere on The Gables or heading towards Ripon — under 10 miles away.

In short: the AdBlue has been sucked into the fuel system. It's been through the fuel filter and your lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. It travels deeper with every mile covered and each restart.

Next: pick a sensible place, pull in, and turn the engine off. On the A1(M), under 5 miles from Scriven, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Restarting it to check achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears itself. Call us and say how far you went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company vehicles

It is a car you have had for a week. On your own car, AdBlue is missing or elsewhere. On this one, its inlet is right next to your diesel inlet — news to you. Throughout North Yorkshire, no one is safe from it.

Put simply: one extra stage on top of the situations above, and those turn on whether it has run. Any work on your car frequently needs the owner's approval under hire or company agreements.

What to do: call the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's quicker settled before we arrive than after. Waiting for a reply in the car park at Knaresborough, or near Park Grove Methodist Church? Keep your car off meanwhile.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, around Scriven

At times, "I think so" is all you can truthfully say. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia around the filler, and you cannot remember which cap you took off. Perhaps it happened in a hurry at the school gates at St Mary's Primary School Knaresborough, A Voluntary Catholic Academy, or on a friend's drive in Farnham.

What it means: a little spilled around your filler does no harm to your engine. The diesel tank with AdBlue inside is a different story. Any AdBlue in your tank would be drawn in by starting the car, and the start would not settle which it is in any case.

Do this: behave as if it did, and don't start the engine. Call us and explain what you saw; we would rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Scriven AdBlue drain

No matter the situation, one start is used. Three questions come when our engineers arrive — on a forecourt, a driveway, a road beside Knaresborough Community Centre or the car park at The Worlds End: the fluid, the amount, and whether it has been started. Your price comes over the phone, ahead of anyone setting off, and the answers set the work.

Emptying the tank comes first, then a careful flush — more important after urea than with petrol, because crystals and corrosion will not go on their own, however long you wait. Clean diesel is put in once the fuel filter has been flushed or changed, and the car is then checked. Never started? In that case about half an hour once we are there is most jobs.

The final step is firing it up. With clean diesel in, it runs while our technicians check it's running properly, and then we leave. Our engineers do the whole job where your car is, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been caught quickly. Nothing is taken upfront, payment is made on the day, and you receive what the insurer wants: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. It is worth remembering: many insurers offer misfuelling cover, and so a check of your documents as we travel is worthwhile.
