AdBlue in a diesel on a Seabridge forecourt

Imagine it: standing by the petrol pump, holding the bottle, you realise the filler you took off wasn't the correct one. Maybe you're at the Esso, maybe at the BP, possibly somewhere else in Seabridge.

In short: no better spot exists to discover it. Still inside the tank, and nothing drawn through: that's where the AdBlue is.

Next: avoid the temptation to fire it up only to free up the petrol pump. A few things: a shove into a bay with the attendants helping, the bottle kept, and a call to us from where you stand. Can't move it beside the petrol pump? Our explosion-proof kit keeps a busy forecourt sensible, so it can be drained in place.

AdBlue in the diesel tank on a Seabridge drive?

Days had passed with the warning light on. A bottle bought at the garage, emptied in on the drive — and it was only by the bin that the cap caught a second look. It takes place on driveways just off Guernsey Drive as often as anywhere.

The upshot: zero miles since leaves it almost as good to finding it at the pump. Diesel and AdBlue stay separate: the AdBlue settles to the base of that tank and stays there, however long the night.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so no one moves the vehicle in the morning. Then ring. Butterton or Seabridge: wherever your driveway is, that's where it is emptied. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Seabridge

On the road in Seabridge with AdBlue in a diesel

Rough running, smoke, lost power or a glowing dashboard started a short way after the fill. Ridgmont Road, say, or the way towards Stoke-on-Trent — a trip of under 5 miles.

Meaning? The pump has sucked the AdBlue in. The injection pump and each injector see it too on a longer trip, after the fuel filter and lines have it. It travels further with each extra mile covered and each restart.

Next: pick a safe place, pull in, then turn the engine off. Services farther on are too far: on the M6, under a mile out of Seabridge, take the first junction. Starting it again to check gets nothing — AdBlue never clears itself. Let us hear the distance driven as you call.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company vehicles

It is a car you have had for a week. On your own car, AdBlue is absent or elsewhere. On this one, its cap is just next to your diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Across Staffordshire, no one is safe from it.

Meaning? Whichever case above applies here — run or not — and one extra stage. Many hire and fleet contracts require the owner's approval for work.

Next: phone the hire company or your fleet manager first, then us — sorting it before we arrive is quicker. If you are stuck in the car park outside Stoke-On-Trent, or by Clayton Library, while you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, in Seabridge

"I think so" is sometimes the most honest answer there is. Which cap was taken off, you can't say; meanwhile the bottle weighs less than it ought to, and ammonia hangs by the filler. Possibly it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Seabridge Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Shutlanehead.

The point: the motor isn't harmed by some AdBlue spilled around the outside. AdBlue inside the diesel tank does. Any AdBlue in the tank would be sucked in by firing up your car, and the start would not settle which it is in any case.

What to do: treat it as if it got in. Don't fire it up. Ring us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in every Seabridge AdBlue drain

Each situation gets the same opening to the job. Anywhere the vehicle is — The Seabridge's car park, a road beside Our Lady and St Werburgh RC, a driveway, a forecourt — our van arrives and asks for the fluid, the quantity, and whether the motor has been run. Answers set the work; the price comes by phone whilst nobody has set off yet.

Then that tank is cleared and your system flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not rinse out on its own. Finally are your filter, cleaned or replaced as needed; fresh diesel; and a check of the vehicle. The majority of unstarted cars are a half-hour job from the moment our engineers get there.

Our technicians start the engine at the end. With clean diesel in, it runs while our technicians make sure it's running correctly, and then we leave. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, and if it's noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual. Payment comes on the day, never upfront. For your insurer, you get a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. It is worth knowing: many insurers include misfuelling cover, so a check of your documents as we travel is worthwhile.
