Seacombe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and keep your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes once the pump starts drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Seacombe, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the motor has been run. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Seacombe

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, which prevents anyone switching the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Which product, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers will see.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting CH44 7, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the car.

Don't do these:

  • Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch up Wheatland Lane is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Seacombe filling station — the Shell among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its fuel from. A motor filled on a drive in Birkenhead yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though when your engine runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it remains there. Overnight, a car parked around Seacombe with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it is only inside your tank, it doesn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a separate form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Seacombe

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a fault of thin fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left in your tank, it does nothing.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Seacombe or out in Vauxhall, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there's good news. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Merseyside the car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Seacombe

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs invite it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Rushing, outside St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Wallasey, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car. Close to Vernon Avenue, someone tips a container in at home in the evening. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Brighton, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are around Seacombe or the rest of Merseyside, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Seacombe: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Via your filter, along the lines, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Perhaps coming back from Central Park, or midway across Seacombe, your motor might go rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or cut out. No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then switch it off. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the Kingsway, under 3 miles from Seacombe, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Hopping across Seacombe to the car park by Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Joseph's Parish is one thing; heading towards Liverpool, under 3 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop. When it is spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Seacombe

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Seacombe: a side street near St Paul, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run, since those replies determine this work.

Then your tank is drained where the vehicle sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Testing the vehicle follows at the end, after clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, if needed, swapped. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where the engine has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Finally, your system is primed with clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at Birkenhead Park or on a driveway around Seacombe. Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in. Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

AdBlue drains in Seacombe and across Merseyside

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls in Seacombe also cover the locations around it, Egremont, Poulton and Liscard among them, and most of Merseyside beyond, across the CH postcode area. Guessing won't help close to a border or somewhere tricky to describe; ring and ask.

Seacombe is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Seacombe?

Since each callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind Eureka! Science + Discovery.

That's why each call from Seacombe starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run. When those are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

Our price is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is travelling, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
