Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Seaton Delaval

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave your ignition off. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system draws it in. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where the car stands around Seaton Delaval. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Seaton Delaval: the first few minutes

Do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take the keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Which product, and about what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will see.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting NE25 0, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Do not do these:

  • No starting the motor — not briefly, not to reposition your car.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way up Blyth Street.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Seaton Delaval, whether it is the Wheatridge Park Filling Station or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. At home, the vehicle stays exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It sinks, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Holywell last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Seaton Delaval with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only in that tank, it doesn't. And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Seaton Delaval

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Co-op Food, and this problem is diluted fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Seaton Delaval or out in East Cramlington, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only in your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Northumberland.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Seaton Delaval?

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Seaton Delaval First School, because your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Avenue Road. Otherwise, after dark outside The Split Chimp Tavern, your car is topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new ones, fleet cars, and the spare car in a family with both fuels. Anywhere around Northumberland, Seaton Delaval included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Seaton Delaval?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Astley Park or halfway across Seaton Delaval. Once you safely can, stop and switch it off — with no turning it on again to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Seaton Delaval lies under 10 miles from the A167(M); if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why crossing Seaton Delaval to park beside Seaton Deleval Arts Centre and a drive of under 10 miles for Newcastle upon Tyne are such separate jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. If it's spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Seaton Delaval: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street beside AK Fitness, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest around Seaton Delaval, our engineers come to it. Three answers decide the work, and so first our engineers ask what was put in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned right through since what remains will not wash out unaided. Clean diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if your motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last. You drive off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Seaton Delaval or in a bay by the nearest station. The check before we go is that it runs correctly on new diesel. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Seaton Delaval: the cost of fixing it

Since each callouts vary, a single figure would not be fair. Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Elsdon Avenue Church.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Seaton Delaval call begins by asking precisely that, before any quote, not afterwards. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. While the van is on the way, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
