AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Sedgeletch? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just comes once your pump begins pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Sedgeletch, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do right now, Sedgeletch: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Remove your keys, which prevents anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and about how much volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can see.
  • Give us a postcode starting DH4 5, or whatever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition the car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down Sedgeletch Bridge.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Sedgeletch forecourt — the JET included — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Fence Houses last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's flushed out. Overnight, a car parked around Sedgeletch with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it's just in your tank, it doesn't. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Sedgeletch

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a problem of thin fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the next fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Sedgeletch or out in Grasswell, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere across Tyne and Wear your car has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Sedgeletch?

Many cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one means it. Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside Dubmire Primary, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Sedgeletch Road. Else, in dim light by The Beehive, your car is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare motor in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people know least. Leave it off: that is the first step to the same mistake, anywhere in Sedgeletch or the rest of Tyne and Wear you happen to be.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Sedgeletch, and the motor started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. With any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the filter and lines.

Perhaps coming back from Elba Park, or midway across Sedgeletch, your motor might run rough, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Sedgeletch lies under 3 miles from the A1(M); if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why crossing Sedgeletch to park beside Russell Foster Building and a drive of under 10 miles for Sunderland are very distinct jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. If it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Sedgeletch?

A street beside Bank Head Church, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Sedgeletch, our engineers come to it. Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue won't wash away by itself. Testing your car comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, swapped. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Sedgeletch or in a space by Chester-Le-Street. The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

Sedgeletch and Tyne and Wear: AdBlue drains across the area

Wherever the vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers drain it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Sedgeletch, a rural hamlet, well.

Sedgeletch: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so not one single quote is honest. What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Fencehouses War Memorial.

That is why each call from Sedgeletch starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. Given them, a range narrows to a single fixed figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
