AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Settle? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts until the engine sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Settle, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Settle

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting BD24 9, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.
  • Even a short stretch up Duke Street is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying that tank yourself beside the road is not one to try.

Moving your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Settle forecourt you are on, the Asda Express included. Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. From a separate reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what the engine lets out. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Stackhouse last night and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there. A vehicle left standing around Settle with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Settle

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the another forecourt nearby, and the issue is diluted fuel. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in your tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn. Whether the car sits in Mearbeck or the centre of Settle, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around North Yorkshire your vehicle sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Settle

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Usually it's not the filling station: someone picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Settle Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off Chapel Street, as the day ends. Otherwise, after dark outside Bar 13, your vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, new motors, company motors, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it most. Anywhere across North Yorkshire, Settle included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Settle?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Your filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Grove Park, or midway across Settle, the engine might run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or stall. No restarting to test: pull over once safe, then turn it off. Every start pulls more of that through.

Settle sits under 25 miles from the M65; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Settle to the car park by Listening Gallery is a very different job from a run towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is caught early.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Settle

A street beside The Place, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest around Settle, we come to it. Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has run, because those replies decide this work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since what remains won't wash away unaided. A test of your car follows last, after clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, where needed, swapped. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step. Whether it is a parking bay at the nearest station or a drive in Settle, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off. Our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave. No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Settle?

Because the callouts vary, a flat figure would not be honest. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Studio Vault.

What was put in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Settle enquiry opens with exactly that, ahead of a quote, never after. With them, the range shrinks to one firm number.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. While our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.
