AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Seven Sisters? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition too. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. The harm starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where the car stands in Seven Sisters. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Seven Sisters

To do:

  • Take your keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting SA10 9, or whatever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

  • Do not start your engine, even for a moment to move the car.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up A4109.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

At a forecourt in Seven Sisters, whether it's the Murco or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump. On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel. It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Penrhos last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there. A car left sitting around Seven Sisters with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, which is a second form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Seven Sisters

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Tesco, and the problem is diluted fuel. No harm is done as long as it sits unused, mixed into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Whether the vehicle sits in Caer-bont or the heart of Seven Sisters, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across Neath Port Talbot your vehicle sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Seven Sisters: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up the car. After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near High Street. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park by Bryndulais Hotel.

The least familiar vehicles get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuels. Wherever you are around Seven Sisters or the rest of Neath Port Talbot, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Seven Sisters?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, maybe part way across Seven Sisters or coming back from Ystradfawr Nature Reserve. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Seven Sisters, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Seven Sisters to park beside Seven Sisters Community Centre and a drive of under 15 miles towards Swansea are such different jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to flush once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Long-term damage is very unusual if it is caught early.

Seven Sisters: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street by Dulais Valley Quads, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the car has come to rest in Seven Sisters, our technicians travel to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and if your engine has run, since those replies settle the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains won't clear away by itself. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last. After that our engineers fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Neath or a driveway around Seven Sisters. Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel before leaving. As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Seven Sisters

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Three things shift the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Mimosa.

That's why every call from Seven Sisters starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run. Their answers narrow a range down to one figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
