Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Seven Stars. Here in advance? In that case the rest covers why it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of modern diesels driven around Seven Stars and Broadfield carry a second liquid as well. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has a filler of its own. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently. It's in that gap that the error happens.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Seven Stars

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a driveway off Grove Street before work, or in the car park outside Old Original Seven Stars heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a new vehicle.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it. It's seconds, be it out in Wade Hall or bang in the heart of Seven Stars.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Moss Side or a forecourt in Seven Stars, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.
  • Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Open the flap and check for a label — many cars mark what goes in each filler right there.
  • The handbook says where it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Leyland, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere you are in Lancashire — a routine to follow.

  • Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Slater Lane.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.
  • Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using the own spout.
  • Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop. Step five is off limits.

Seven Stars: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump. Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Tesco, Morrisons or any other — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle away, when you ask. Your own driveway around Seven Stars is where it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The next junction is where to leave if you are on the M6, under 3 miles from Seven Stars. A short hop across Seven Stars is a smaller job than a run towards Preston, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

Seven Stars: what happens when our technicians arrive

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Anne's Catholic Primary School, near Lowerhouse Community Centre or on your own drive. Those answers settle this work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run. On the phone call itself, you are told our price — ahead of anything else.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. Once the filter has been flushed — or replaced, where required — clean diesel is added, and finally your car is tested. The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need about half an hour after our technicians are there. Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
