Shade: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

One thing counts above all when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is whether the engine has run since. Anywhere your car stands — Knowl Wood, Shade — don't run an engine that has not been started yet. Call 0333 366 0103 with your key and engine both off. Across Shade, such a case is generally emptied and cleaned where it stands. When your motor has run, stop safely straight away, then switch it off. It's a larger job, though step one does not change.

Below: the cases we see, anywhere across West Yorkshire. Pick yours.

At the pump around Shade: AdBlue in a diesel

You're at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Whether Shell, Texaco or somewhere else in Shade, the situation is the same.

The point: of all places to notice, the forecourt is the best. Just the tank has AdBlue; no part beyond it has taken it in.

What to do: do not get back in and fire it up to clear the petrol pump. A few things: a shove into a space with the attendants helping, the bottle kept, and a call to us from the forecourt. Stuck beside the pump? Our explosion-proof kit keeps a busy forecourt sensible, and so it can be drained in place.

At home around Shade with AdBlue in the diesel tank

For days the dashboard had been nagging you. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the drive, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look once more at the cap. It takes place on driveways just off Rochdale Road as regularly as anywhere.

In short: if your vehicle hasn't moved since, it is almost equal to finding out at the pump. Being unable to mix, AdBlue drops to the base inside your tank and stays. A night parked changes nothing.

Put the keys indoors tonight — or a person may take it off at breakfast — then call us. Your drive is where it gets emptied, be it in Shade or Salford. Our equipment works quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Shade

On the road in Shade with AdBlue in a diesel

Filled up, drove away, and soon the engine was running unevenly, smoking, losing power, or lighting up the dash. It might have been heading to Bradford, under 25 miles away, or simply along Oak Street.

The upshot: the system has drawn AdBlue through already. Distance decides how deep it goes: filter and pipework to begin with, then the high-pressure pump and every injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Do this: stop anywhere safe, then turn your engine off. Service stations farther on can wait: from the M62, under 10 miles out of Shade, take the next junction. Starting it again to check gets nothing — AdBlue never clears on its own. Let us know the mileage driven when you call.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

A week back, it was unknown to you. On your own car, AdBlue is absent or somewhere else. On this one, its cap is right next to the diesel inlet — news to you. It can happen to anyone, anywhere across West Yorkshire.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it's run, with one more step. Many hire and company agreements require the owner's approval for repairs.

Your move: rental firm or your fleet manager to begin with, us next, because sorting it early cuts time. Leave the vehicle switched off as the reply arrives, whether you're parked at Todmorden or near Kindness.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank around Shade?

"I think so" is sometimes as honest answer there is. Too light, that bottle; a hint of ammonia near your filler; a hazy recollection of the cap. Look familiar? Possibly it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Shade Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Millwood.

Meaning? Spills outside the inlet never reach your motor at all. In the diesel tank, however, AdBlue harms it. Firing up your car cannot tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in your tank it will pull it in.

What to do: treat it as if it went in. Do not crank it. Describe what you noticed on the phone. A clear tank looked at is a happier result than an already-run one drained.

The common ground in each Shade AdBlue drain

Whichever situation you are in, this job starts the same way. Wherever your vehicle stands — Bridge End Workmens Club's car park, a road by John Fielden, a driveway, a filling station — our van arrives and we ask about the fluid, the amount, and if your engine has been run. Over the phone, ahead of anything else, you hear our price, and those replies shape the job too.

AdBlue crystallises and eats at certain metals in fuel systems, so it does not rinse out on its own; that is why the flush, after this drain, matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol. Then comes the filter — cleaned, or swapped when needed — then clean diesel, and a test of your car. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

Starting the engine comes last. Before we head off, it's checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it's noticed soon, and the entire job is done where the car is. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, nothing in advance. Check your insurance before we arrive: misfuelling cover comes built into many policies.
