Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shay Gate: Why It Occurs

Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Shay Gate, is usually all it takes if caught before the engine runs. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your engine — but plenty of newer diesels seen round Shay Gate and Norr carry another liquid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. Many of motors have a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time. Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.

Shay Gate: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Prune Park Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside Prune Park Inn.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Sandy Lane or the middle of Shay Gate: it is the same few seconds in both.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Lee Lane or a forecourt in Shay Gate.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
  • On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark which belongs in which inlet right there.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The previous driver will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Bingley's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

  • Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Shay Gate on the verge.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop. Do not go on to stage five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Shay Gate?

The short order of things, starting with no starting the motor. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the pump. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Shay Gate.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then turn off. The next junction means the place to leave if you are on the M606, under 5 miles from Shay Gate. A short hop across Shay Gate is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 5 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Shay Gate: what takes place when we get there

The van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Pyche Nook, or by Sandy Lane Primary School. Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the replies decide the work and our quote. That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is emptied. Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out on its own, however long it is left. Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car. The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary. The drain takes place right there, whether a driveway, a street by Wilsden Cenotaph, or a lay-by towards Greenwood Park. If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Wilsden Village Hall, ring and ask rather than assuming.
