AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Shearing Cross? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens till your engine pulls it through. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Shearing Cross. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Shearing Cross, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting HD1 5, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Turning your key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short way down St Johns Road.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Moving your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Shearing Cross forecourt you are on, the Tesco included. On the drive, your car stays exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — quite different from fuel. The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle filled in Huddersfield last night and never started stays the simple one, as long as no one turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of harm. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A vehicle left standing in Shearing Cross with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole problem. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Shearing Cross or out in Fartown, does more harm than nearly any other error.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across West Yorkshire your vehicle sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Shearing Cross

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually takes place outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. The top-up is hurried outside Brambles Primary Academy, because the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in. A driver pours the container in outside their house, just off Beck Road, as the day ends. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Sportsman Beerhouse, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're in Shearing Cross or the rest of West Yorkshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Shearing Cross, and the engine started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might show up, maybe midway across Shearing Cross or returning from Highfields Community Orchard. When you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — with no restarting to see. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M62, under 3 miles from Shearing Cross, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

Hopping across Shearing Cross to the car park by Huddersfield Elim is one thing; heading towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the car has ended up, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Shearing Cross: what it takes

A road beside Clare Hill Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the car has come to rest around Shearing Cross, our technicians come to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, because those replies decide the work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through because what remains won't wash out unaided. Testing your vehicle comes last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, where necessary, swapped. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Lastly, the fuel system is bled with new diesel. Whether it's a parking bay by Huddersfield or a drive in Shearing Cross, that is where our technicians fire it up and you head off. We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving. We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage. Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Shearing Cross: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so not one single price would be honest. The price moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Besançon Bridge.

Before any quote, never after, each enquiry from Shearing Cross begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and if it ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our price is given during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
