Shepley: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes once your pump starts drawing it. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where your car stands around Shepley. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
What to do straight away, Shepley: AdBlue in your diesel tank
Do these:
- Pocket the keys, and that stops someone switching the power on.
- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so don't throw it away.
- Give us a postcode starting HD8 8, or whatever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.
Things not to do:
- Moving the vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.
- Turning your key to ignition alone starts your pump running on many diesels. Skip it.
- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is pointless.
- Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short way down Station Road.
- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.
Rolling the car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Shepley forecourt you're on, the The co-operative or any other. On that drive, the vehicle stays exactly as it was left.
AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there
AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to travel that way.
Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its supply from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Upper Cumberworth last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.
From there it causes two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. By daybreak, a car sitting in Shepley with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is only in your tank, nothing changes. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and each injector.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol
Petrol pumped into a diesel on Star Garage's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the whole issue. No harm is done while it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Gate Foot or the heart of Shepley alike.
As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever across West Yorkshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Shepley
Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.
A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. Rushing, outside Shepley First School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills your car. Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Abbey Road South, as the day ends. Else, in dim light outside Black Bull, your car is refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.
It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you are around Shepley or the rest of West Yorkshire.
Shepley: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Via your filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.
You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Push Dam Wood or halfway across Shepley. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.
Shepley lies under 10 miles from the M1; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.
A quick hop across Shepley to the car park by Library and Information Centre is one matter; heading towards Wakefield, under 15 miles away, is another, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
We do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Caught early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.
What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Shepley
Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Shepley: a side street close to St Paul's Shepley, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if your engine has run, since those replies settle the work.
Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. Residue from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol. Next, your filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of your car. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step. Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a driveway around Shepley. Before we go, our engineers check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Shepley
There is no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same. The price moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Shepley Methodist Church.
For that in mind, every call from Shepley begins with the same trio — which fluid went in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any figure. With them, the range narrows to one firm figure.
Before a van sets off, you hear the quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
