Sherwood Rise: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Usually, when your motor has not run, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is in Sherwood Rise. The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.
AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank
Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Sherwood Rise and Hyson Green carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.
There's a filler for each tank. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Sherwood Rise?
Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off 4th Avenue, or at The Grosvenor on the way home after work.
The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a new car.
A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, carries on. It's a few seconds, whether out in Mapperley Park or bang in the heart of Sherwood Rise.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Sherwood Rise or a driveway over in Carrington. A few seconds, no more.
- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.
- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Nottingham? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
The day the light comes on, anywhere in Nottinghamshire, use this routine.
- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Alberta Terrace at the roadside.
- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
- Both under one flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.
- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.
Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Never go on to stage five.
Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Sherwood Rise already?
Short list, then. First: your engine remains off. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.
Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the Valero or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Sherwood Rise.
Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. The next junction is the place to leave if you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Sherwood Rise. About how far did it go? Hopping across Sherwood Rise is less work than a trip of under 3 miles towards Nottingham, so say.
What occurs when we turn up in Sherwood Rise
We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Claremont Primary and Nursery School, close to Madni Masjid or on your own drive. What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies decide both work and price. That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.
The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it sits. After the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested. Before we go, our engineers start it and make sure that it's running correctly.
With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after our technicians arrive. The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

The vehicle does not need to shift. The drain happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a street near Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa, or a lay-by on the way to John Farr Rest Garden. Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Sumac Centre.
