Shilburn: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Usually, if your motor hasn't run, it is drained and fully rinsed where your car sits around Shilburn. The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Shilburn and Wooley carry another liquid as well. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Shilburn: how it happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Shilburn Road, or outside The Golden Lion on the way home after work.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Allendale Town or the heart of Shilburn: it is the same few seconds either way.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Catton or a forecourt in Shilburn, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.
  • Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Check inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot see it beside your diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Haydon Bridge? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Northumberland that is.

  • Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Lonkley Terrace at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.

Shilburn: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: the engine stays off. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another — the attendants will normally help roll your car away, when you ask. If you are on your own driveway in Shilburn, leave the vehicle where it is.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off. Leave the M6 — under 25 miles out of Shilburn — at the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Shilburn is smaller a job than a trip of under 50 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne, so tell us.

What takes place when our engineers arrive around Shilburn

The van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Allendale Village Hall, or by Allendale Primary School. We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, since those answers determine this work and the quote. On the call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. The motor is started next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

AdBlue drains round Shilburn, and Northumberland beyond

Being a residential suburb, Shilburn has the same vans as surrounding areas — Bridge End, Thornley Gate — all the way across NE postcodes and the surrounding area around them. A postcode starting NE47 9 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle remains where it is. Draining takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by St Cuthbert's, or a layby towards Shieldburn Plantation. Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Wesleyan Trinity Methodist Church.
