Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sibland: Why It Happens
Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the car stands in Sibland, is usually what it takes if caught before the engine runs. The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.
AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank
Plenty of newer diesels around Thornbury, like those in Sibland, carry on two liquids; the motor gets only your diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.
Separate tanks, separate fillers. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time. Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.
Sibland: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs
Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.
Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Jubilee Drive, or heading home in the car park outside The Black Horse.
Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.
Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it. Gillingstool or the middle of Sibland: it takes the same few seconds either way.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Morton or a forecourt in Sibland.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.
- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.
- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
- Cannot see it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say which.
- The previous driver knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Yate's car park, say — not when the warning appears.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are in Gloucestershire — a simple routine to use.
- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside Sibland Road on the verge.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
- The two under one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.
- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through its built-in spout.
- Close the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.
Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Step five stays off limits.
Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Sibland?
Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.
Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Thornbury Motors, the Tesco or anywhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Sibland.
Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run. Leave the M5 — under 3 miles out of Sibland — at the first junction. About how far did it go? Crossing Sibland is smaller a job than a trip of under 15 miles towards Bristol, so tell us.
Our arrival in Sibland, and what takes place next
Our van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Chris Zair, or outside Crossways Infant School. Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask. The quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.
Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it matters more. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Next our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.
Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house. No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
