AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Skidby: What Now?

One thing matters most once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and it is if the engine has been started since. Over in Willerby Bottom or here around Skidby, an unrun engine should stay unrun. Phone 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and motor both off. In Skidby, such a case is typically drained and flushed on the spot. When the motor has run, stop somewhere safe straight away, then turn the car off. A bigger job, then, yet the identical opening move.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Skidby forecourt

You are at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Maybe you're at the BP, perhaps at the Shell, possibly somewhere else around Skidby.

Meaning? Spotting it here is as good as it gets. Still inside that tank, and no fuel drawn through: that's where the AdBlue is.

Freeing the petrol pump is no excuse to run it — so don't get back in. Get the staff to help rolling it into a space, save the bottle, then ring us from there. If it cannot be moved, it can be emptied at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a working forecourt.

Skidby, at home: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Several days had passed with the warning light on. Picked up a bottle, tipped it in outside the house, binned the empty — and only then looked at the cap a second time, after the fact. It happens on drives just off Church Rise as commonly as anywhere.

Put simply: if the car hasn't been driven since, it's nearly as good as finding out at the forecourt. As it is unable to mix, AdBlue drops low in the tank and waits. A night parked alters nothing.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so no one moves the car in the morning. Then call. We drain the car on your driveway, whether that is in Skidby or out in Eppleworth. The pumping kit runs quietly enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Skidby: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

Filled up, drove away, and before long the motor was turning roughly, blowing smoke, losing power, or flashing up the dash. Maybe driving to Kingston upon Hull, under 10 miles away, or simply along Chapel Close.

The upshot: the system has drawn AdBlue through by now. Distance decides how far it gets: filter and lines first, then the high-pressure pump and each injector. Every restart, like every mile, pushes it deeper.

Next: find a sensible spot, stop, then switch your motor off. Leave by the first junction — not the services further along — if you are on the M62, under 10 miles from Skidby. It will not have cleared, and so there's no point starting it again to find out. Ring us and say how far you travelled.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

It's a motor you have had for a week. Your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, so no one told you the AdBlue cap was just next to your diesel. Throughout East Riding of Yorkshire, no one is safe from it.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. Many hire and fleet agreements require the owner's sign-off before work.

Settling it before the van arrives is faster, and so ring the rental company or your fleet manager, then us. Leave the car off while the reply arrives, whether you're waiting outside Cottingham or near St Michael's Church.

Skidby: unsure whether it was AdBlue in the diesel tank?

"I think so" is sometimes the most honest answer there is. A slight ammonia whiff hangs near the filler, the bottle feels too light, and which cap came off is hard to recall. Maybe it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Skidby Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Cottingham.

Put simply: spillage near your filler leaves the motor no harm. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. You can't tell which by turning the key, and doing so will pull in any AdBlue that is in that tank.

Assume it got in, and never turn your engine. Call us and describe what you saw; we would rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Skidby AdBlue drain

Whatever the situation, one opening is used. Anywhere your vehicle is — Half Moon's car park, a road beside Skidby Village Hall & Institute, a driveway, a filling station — our van gets there and asks for the fluid, the amount, plus whether your motor has turned over. Replies set the work; the price comes by phone while nobody has set off yet.

A thorough flush comes after this drain. With petrol it's routine; with AdBlue it's crucial, since crystals build up and some metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

The last step is firing it up. Our check that it runs correctly on clean diesel comes before we go. The entire job is done where the car is, and if it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of policies include misfuelling, so check yours as we head over.
