AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Skye Green? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition as well. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble begins once it is pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in Skye Green. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Skye Green: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CO5 9, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Moving your car even a short way is no reason to start your engine.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short stretch up Mill Lane is too far to drive it.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

At a forecourt in Skye Green, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. On the drive, the car stays exactly where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a separate tank it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It doesn't blend. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the pickup sucks from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Stocks Green overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, untouched — though it would be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it touches till it is removed from your system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. A motor left standing around Skye Green with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the main issue. Blended into the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; running the motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the following fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Skye Green or out in East Gores, does more harm than almost any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Anywhere across Essex your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Skye Green?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it's never the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. The refill gets rushed outside St Peter's Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, Coggeshall, because your dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Old Road. One more version: dim light, the car park by Kings Arms, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet vehicle, or the other car in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people know least. Wherever across Essex, Skye Green included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

Skye Green: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through your filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it has gone.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from The Green, say, or midway across Skye Green. Once you safely can, pull over and turn it off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

Skye Green lies under 25 miles from the M11; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Skye Green to park beside Feering Evangelical Church and a drive of under 10 miles for Colchester are very distinct jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's spotted quickly.

Skye Green: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street beside Coggeshall Abbey, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has stopped in Skye Green, we come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run, since those answers decide this work.

Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because what remains won't flush out by itself. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step. Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, by Kelvedon or on a drive in Skye Green. Before we leave, our engineers make sure it is running correctly with fresh diesel in. No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Skye Green

There's no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind St James the Less, Little Tey.

With that in mind, each enquiry from Skye Green opens by asking the identical trio — what got in, how much, if it ran — ahead of a figure. Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is travelling, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
