What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Slack
One fact counts above all once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if the engine has been started since. Over in Lower Hirst or here in Slack, an unstarted engine should stay that way. Usually this is draining and properly cleaning it right there around Slack — and so leave the key and engine off then call 0333 366 0103. When your motor has run, pull in safely first, then switch the vehicle off. A bigger job, yes, but the same first move.
Wherever across West Yorkshire it happened, one of the cases below fits yours.
AdBlue in a diesel on a Slack forecourt
The cap you unscrewed was the wrong one — and you just spot it as you are stood at the petrol pump, bottle or nozzle in hand. Anywhere in Slack, then — Scientific Lubricants, BP, or anywhere else nearby.
What it means: this is the best place to find out. The AdBlue is in that tank and nowhere else. Nothing has drawn it in.
Your move: keep out of the car, however much the pump wants clearing. Ask the attendants to help you push your car into a parking spot, keep the receipt or the bottle, then phone us from the forecourt. Draining it right at the pump is fine when it can't be shifted, because the equipment is explosion-proof.
AdBlue in your diesel tank on a Slack drive?
For days the dash had been nagging you. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the drive, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look once more at the cap. It happens on drives just off Round Ings Road as often as anywhere.
The upshot: zero driving since makes it nearly as good to finding it at the petrol pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.
What to do: leave your keys inside the house so no one moves the car in the morning. Then call. Outlane or Slack: wherever your drive is, that's where it gets drained. Even at night, our pumps stay quiet enough for a driveway.
AdBlue in a diesel and already driving around Slack?
Filled up, pulled away, and before long your engine was running unevenly, blowing smoke, losing power, or lighting up your dash. Perhaps it was on Slack Lane, perhaps on the way out towards Bradford, under 15 miles away.
What it means: the system has drawn the AdBlue in. It has been through the fuel filter and your lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors. More miles, more restarts: further it travels.
What to do: pull over where it is safe to do so and switch off. On the M62, under a mile from Slack, that means the next junction, not the services further on. Starting it again to test gets nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear itself. Phone, saying how far the car was driven.
AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car
A week ago, it was unknown to you. Unbeknown to you, the AdBlue and diesel inlets sit side by side here — not like your own car, which has none or keeps it in another spot. Anyone, anywhere in West Yorkshire, could make the same.
What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it's run, with one more stage. Plenty of hire and fleet agreements require the owner's approval before repairs.
What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's quicker settled before we get there than after. If you're stranded in the car park outside Slaithwaite, or by Roman Fort (Site), while you wait for an answer, leave your car off.
Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank in Slack?
"I think so" is sometimes as honest answer there is. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there is a faint smell of ammonia around your filler, and you can't remember which cap you took off. The gates of Scapegoat Hill Junior and Infant School in a rush, say, or someone's drive out in Snow Lea.
In short: spillage near the filler does your motor no harm. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. If there is AdBlue in your tank, turning on your car would suck it in, and it would not tell you which either.
Assume it got in, and don't start the engine. Call us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.
The common ground in each Slack AdBlue drain
The work begins identically, whichever the case. We come to the car, whether it's at a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside The Commercial Inn or a side street close to Outlane Methodist Church, and ask three things: what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run. Your price is given over the phone, before a van leaves, and the replies set the work.
Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there.
Lastly, our technicians start it. Our test that it runs properly on fresh diesel comes before our engineers go. We do the whole job where your car is, and long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been caught soon. Payment comes that day, never in advance. For the insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. Plenty of policies cover misfuelling, so check yours as we head over.

Slack and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area
Being a rural hamlet, Slack has the same vans as the nearby towns — Outlane Moor, Nettleton Hill — all the way through HD postcodes. Your location is quickest from a postcode beginning HD3 3.
Whether the vehicle is on a lay-by on the way to Outlane Golf Club or in a car park in the middle of Slack, it doesn't need to shift. Our technicians drain it where it stands. If you are somewhere hard to describe, near St Mary Magdalene's Church or close to a border, ring and ask instead of assuming.
