Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Slead Syke: Why It Occurs

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Usually, when the motor has not run, it's emptied and fully cleaned where your car sits in Slead Syke. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels in Brighouse, like those in Slead Syke, carry on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use. It is in the gap that the slip lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Slead Syke: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Granny Hall Grove before work, or in the car park at The Prince Albert heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Slead Syke or out in Hove Edge.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Thornhills or a forecourt in Slead Syke.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Brighouse, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is in West Yorkshire — a routine to use.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Granny Hall Lane.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through its built-in spout.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Don't go on to step five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Slead Syke?

Do not start the engine: that's where the short order of things starts. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive in Slead Syke? Then the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. Slead Syke sits under 3 miles from the M62; there, use the next exit. About how far did it go? Crossing Slead Syke is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles towards Bradford, and so say.

Slead Syke: what takes place when our technicians arrive

The van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Waring Green Community Centre, or by St Andrew's Church of England (VA) Infant School. Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what liquid, which amount, and if it has run — so we ask. Nobody sets off until you have heard the price by phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed. Before we go, we fire it up and make sure that it's running properly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run need about half an hour once our technicians are there. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
