AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Smithills? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep the ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble starts once it is sucked through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle sits around Smithills. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Smithills, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, and that prevents someone switching the electrics on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BL1 6, or whatever street lies closest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine stays off.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Smithills Croft Road.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll the car off the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Smithills, whether it's the Asda or elsewhere. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its supply from. A motor filled on a drive in Doffcocker yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when your motor runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

After it's drawn in, the harm takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight in Smithills leaves it worse. Inside the tank only, time does nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Smithills

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole fault. No damage is done as long as it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only when your engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether your vehicle sits in Barrow Bridge or the centre of Smithills, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever in Greater Manchester your vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Smithills: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Usually it's not the filling station: someone picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Peter's Smithills Dean Church of England Primary School the refill is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Smithills Dean Road. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by Ainsworth Arms.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the other motor in a family with both fuels — the vehicles people know the least. Wherever you are in Smithills or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Smithills, and your engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Via the fuel filter, along the lines, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Maybe coming back from Barlow Park, or part way across Smithills, your motor might go rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or stall. When you safely can, pull over and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Smithills sits under 5 miles from the M61; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

A quick hop across Smithills to the car park by Smithills Hall Chapel is one thing; driving towards Salford, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Caught soon, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Smithills: what it takes

A street beside Smithills Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped in Smithills, our technicians travel to it. The job rests on three replies, and our engineers ask for first — what got in, the amount, and if your engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through since what remains will not wash away by itself. Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the vehicle. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we turn up, if the motor has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to bleed the system on fresh diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Hall i' th' Wood or on a driveway in Smithills. It's tested on clean diesel to confirm it runs properly before our technicians go. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Smithills?

There is no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind St Paul's Parish Church.

That's why each call from Smithills starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Our quote is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
