AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Snodland? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The trouble starts once it's sucked through the lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Snodland, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has run. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Snodland: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it away.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting ME6 5, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • Shifting the car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short way up Malling Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Emptying the tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Snodland forecourt you are on, the BP included. On the drive, your car stays just where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very spot the intake draws from. A car filled on a drive in Peters Village yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when the engine runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. It eats at some metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches till it's cleared from the system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle sitting around Snodland. Only in your tank, it stays the same. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a separate form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Snodland

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and this issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside your tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Snodland or out in Lunsford, costs more than almost any other error.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever around Kent your vehicle sits.

Snodland: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Valley Invicta Primary School at Holborough Lakes, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car. Near High St, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Else, in dim light by The Monks Head, the car gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere across Kent, Snodland as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Snodland, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Through the filter, along the lines, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Willowside Park or halfway across Snodland. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M20, under 3 miles from Snodland, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Snodland to the car park by All Saints is a very different job from a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been run. When it is caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Snodland

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street near Christ Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Snodland, and the van comes to it. Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly the amount, plus if your engine has run.

Next, draining that tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash away on its own. After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced when it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step. After that our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by the nearest station or a driveway around Snodland. It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before we leave. Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Snodland

Because the callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest. What changes the cost is, first, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Snodland Town Football Club.

For that reason, every enquiry from Snodland opens with the same trio — what was put in, how much, if it ran — before any quote. Once those are answered, a range turns into one fixed number.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
