AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in South Cave? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around South Cave, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the engine has been run. Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in South Cave

Do:

  • Remove your keys, which prevents anyone turning the power on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting HU15 2, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Don't:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: your engine stays off.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Beverley Road.
  • By the road, don't attempt emptying it on your own.

Ask the attendants to help you move the vehicle away from the island if you are at a forecourt around South Cave, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or elsewhere. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out. No part inside an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very place the intake draws from. A motor filled on a driveway in Ellerker yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's flushed out. By daybreak, a car parked around South Cave with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it's only inside your tank, nothing changes. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water content damages them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and this issue is diluted fuel. No damage comes as long as it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Drewton or the middle of South Cave.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only in the tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever the car has come to rest across East Riding of Yorkshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around South Cave: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside South Cave Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School the top-up is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Church Street. Another version: dim light, the car park outside The Bear, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least known cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same slip, wherever in South Cave or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire you are.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in South Cave?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. It has been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Maybe returning from Wilson Wood, or part way across South Cave, the motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the M62, under 3 miles from South Cave, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

A quick hop across South Cave to the car park by South Cave Library is one matter; heading for Kingston upon Hull, under 15 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted soon.

South Cave: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road by South Cave Sports Centre, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest in South Cave, our engineers travel to it. The work depends on three answers, which our technicians get before all else — what got in, the quantity, and if the motor has run.

Then your tank is drained where your car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't wash away on its own. Next, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of the car. Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to prime your system on new diesel. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around South Cave or in a bay outside Brough. We confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we leave. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.

South Cave: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each callouts differ, a single figure would not be honest. Three things shift the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Cave Castle Health Club.

For that in mind, every call from South Cave opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether it ran — before a figure. Those answers narrow the range right down to one figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
