Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in South Newbarns
If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off and leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump starts drawing it. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where the car stands around South Newbarns. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
South Newbarns, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once
Do:
- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting LA13 9, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.
Don't do these:
- No starting the motor — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
- Turning the key to ignition alone starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.
- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short way along Bridgegate Avenue.
- Beside the road, do not try emptying it yourself.
Get the attendants to help you roll your car off the pumps if you're at a forecourt in South Newbarns, whether it is the Shell or elsewhere. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go through one.
Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Roose Gate overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.
Once it's pulled in, the harm comes in two forms. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked around South Newbarns. Just inside your tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse
Petrol pumped into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the whole issue. Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in the tank, it causes nothing.
AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of South Newbarns or out in Yarlside, does more harm than almost any other slip.
With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Cumbria your car is sitting.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in South Newbarns
It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.
The ways it occurs are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Parkside Academy. In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway close to New Leys. One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside Red River Club, and someone using that flap the first time.
Rented cars, brand-new motors, company motors, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it the most. Wherever around Cumbria, South Newbarns as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.
Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in South Newbarns?
Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.
Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — returning from Little Park, say, or midway across South Newbarns. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than testing it again. Every start pulls more of it through.
On the M6, under 25 miles from South Newbarns, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.
Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so heading towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across South Newbarns to the car park by St. Aidan's Church. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted quickly.
South Newbarns: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel
A street beside Abbots Vale Community Centre, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your car has come to rest around South Newbarns, our engineers come to it. What was put in, about how much, plus if the motor has turned over: we check before all else, since those shape the job.
Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing the car comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, swapped. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your motor has not run. The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.
The final step is to prime the system on new diesel. You drive off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around South Newbarns or in a bay at Roose. Before leaving, our technicians check it's running smoothly with new diesel in. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

South Newbarns: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix
Each job differs, and so no single price would be fair. What changes the price is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Park Leisure Centre.
That's why each call from South Newbarns starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run. When they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.
Before anyone heads out, you hear the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. While our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
