Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Southend

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Southend. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Southend, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops anyone switching the power on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BR1 5, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

  • Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Whitefoot Lane.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Moving your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Southend forecourt you are on, the BP or any other. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Catford overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if your engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside. If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight around Southend leaves things worse. Inside your tank only, time does nothing. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and the issue is thinned fuel. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside the tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether your car is in Plaistow or the centre of Southend, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across Greater London the car sits.

Southend: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. It usually occurs at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside St John Baptist Southend Church of England Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. In the evening, a container goes in on a drive close to Beachborough Road. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Fellowship Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles get it the most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the other motor of a home with both fuels. Same mistake, same first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Southend or the rest of Greater London.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Southend?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any may appear, perhaps midway across Southend or returning from Peter Pan's Park. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M25, under 10 miles from Southend, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading for London, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Southend to the car park by St John the Baptist. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has ended up. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Southend?

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Southend: a side street close to Bellingham Leisure Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those decide the work.

On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through because what remains will not wash away by itself. After that, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. After that clean diesel, then a check of the vehicle. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if the engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, at Beckenham Hill or on a driveway around Southend. The test before we leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel. No workshop is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Southend and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the BR postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue jobs in Southend serve most of Greater London as well, Bellingham, Downham and Bell Green included. If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

A van that comes to you suits Southend, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring the car to us, since our technicians empty it there, on a drive, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Southend?

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind The Annunciation and St Augustine Catholic Church.

What was put in, how much, and if it ran: every Southend enquiry begins with exactly those, ahead of any quote, never afterwards. Given those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm number.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
