Spring Bank: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once your pump starts pulling it. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Spring Bank. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Spring Bank: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting BD21 5, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is pointless.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Spring Bank Rise.
  • Draining the tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

At a forecourt in Spring Bank, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump. If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it stands.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. No part in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to travel that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Knowle Park last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it is cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels. Overnight, a car parked in Spring Bank with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it's only inside the tank, it doesn't. Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Spring Bank

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Morrisons. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Hainworth or the middle of Spring Bank.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, anywhere your car has come to rest in West Yorkshire.

Spring Bank: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; many designs allow it. Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone buys a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. The top-up is hurried outside St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken in. Close to Percy Street, someone tips a bottle in at home after work. Else, after dark by Hope & Anchor, the car is topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars see it most — hire cars, new ones, fleet ones, and the spare car in a family with both fuel types. Anywhere around West Yorkshire, Spring Bank included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Spring Bank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. It has been sucked through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Perhaps returning from Hainworth Wood, or part way across Spring Bank, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave it off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M606, under 10 miles from Spring Bank, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Spring Bank to park beside Museum of Rail Travel and a drive of under 10 miles for Bradford are very different jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed soon.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Spring Bank

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Spring Bank: a side street close to Ingrow Loco Museum, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, since those answers settle the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the system with new diesel comes at the end. You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Spring Bank or in a bay by Keighley. Our engineers confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. At the end, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Spring Bank?

Since each callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest. The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St John's.

Ahead of any quote, never afterwards, each enquiry from Spring Bank opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if the engine ran. When those are answered, a range becomes one fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. As the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
