AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Springfield: What Now?

Has the motor run since the AdBlue went in? This single question decides almost everything else from here. Over in Swinley or here in Springfield, an unrun motor must remain unrun. Usually that means emptying and thoroughly cleaning it right there around Springfield — so keep your ignition and engine off then phone 0333 366 0103. If it has run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. A larger job, yes, but the same opening move.

Further down: the cases our engineers meet, wherever in Greater Manchester. Choose yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Springfield forecourt

Imagine it: stood by the pump, gripping the nozzle, you spot the filler you took off was not the correct one. Possibly you are at the Esso, perhaps at the BP, possibly somewhere else in Springfield.

Meaning? Spotting it on the forecourt is as good as it can be. Nothing has pulled it in, and so the AdBlue stays just inside the tank.

Clearing the petrol pump is no excuse to run it — so don't get back in. Phone us from the forecourt once your vehicle is in a bay — the attendants will lend a hand to roll it — then save the receipt. If it can't be shifted, it can be emptied at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt.

Springfield, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dash had been warning you. Only at the recycling bin, the empty bottle in your hand, did you look back at the cap you had used at the drive. Just off Throstlenest Avenue is no less likely from anywhere.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of the tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Your move: keys in the house, and so nobody drives your vehicle anywhere at breakfast. Then, ring. Gidlow or Springfield: whichever your driveway is, that is where it gets emptied. Even at night, the pumps stay quiet enough for a residential street.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Springfield

Drove off with AdBlue in a diesel in Springfield?

A short way after filling up, your engine started playing up: rough running, smoke, less power, lights on your dash. Whiteside Avenue, say, or the route towards Preston — a run of under 15 miles.

The point: the system has pulled AdBlue in already. Past your filter, along the pipework, and — the further the mileage — deeper into the high-pressure pump and every injector. It goes deeper with every extra mile covered and each restart.

Next: pick a safe place, pull in, and turn the motor off. Exit at the first junction — not the services further along — if you are on the M6, under 3 miles from Springfield. It won't have cleared, and so there is no sense restarting to check. Call us and say how far you went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

You have only had this car for days. On your own car, AdBlue is missing or elsewhere. On this one, the inlet is just next to the diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Across Greater Manchester, no one is immune.

The point: exactly as above, split by if it ran, only with one added stage. The owner often needs to sign off any work, under plenty of rental and company agreements.

Next: ring the rental company or the fleet manager first, then us — sorting it before our arrival is quicker. Leave the vehicle switched off as the reply arrives, whether you are parked at Wigan Wallgate or close to Sacred Heart Church.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Springfield?

Honestly, the best answer may be that you think it did. A slight ammonia whiff hangs around the filler, the bottle feels too light, and the cap you took off is a blur. It might have been on a friend's drive in Martland Mill, or rushing outside Wigan St Andrew's CofE Junior and Infant School at the school run.

The upshot: the engine is not harmed by some AdBlue spilled around the filler. Inside the diesel tank, however, AdBlue harms it. Firing up the car cannot tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it will pull it in.

Take it that it went in, and don't start the engine. Checking a tank that proves free of AdBlue beats emptying one once it's been run — so phone and tell us what you saw.

The common ground in each Springfield AdBlue drain

No matter the situation, one start applies. Filling station, drive, The Springfield's car park or a road beside Sacred Heart Parish Centre — our van comes to the vehicle, and three questions follow: which liquid, what amount, and whether it ran. Your price comes on the call, before a van leaves, and those replies set the work.

A thorough flush follows this drain. With petrol it's routine; with AdBlue it is essential, because deposits form and certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

We start the car last. Before our engineers leave, it is tested to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel. If it's noticed early, the vehicle very rarely has lasting damage, and the entire job happens where it is. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Check your insurance before we're en route: misfuelling cover comes built into plenty of policies.
