AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Springwell? Don't Start It
If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes when your pump starts drawing it. In Springwell, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Springwell: the first few minutes
To do:
- Take your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
- So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
- Ring right where you are. Quote a SR3 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.
Not to do:
- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.
- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
- Even a short way up Swindon Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
- Draining your tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.
Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Springwell forecourt you are on, the Shell included. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.
Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in High Barnes last night and never started remains the simple one, as long as nobody touches your key.
Two kinds of damage come from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. Overnight, a car parked in Springwell with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it is only inside the tank, nothing changes. Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse
Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and the problem is diluted fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside your tank, it causes none.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Grindon or the middle of Springwell.
As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever in Tyne and Wear the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Springwell?
Many cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. No one intends it. A container bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.
It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School, Sunderland the top-up is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Sunningdale Road. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Wavendon, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.
The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, new ones, company cars, and the spare car of a family with both fuels. Same slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you are in Springwell or the remainder of Tyne and Wear.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Springwell, and your engine started?
In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Through your filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is where it travels.
You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Barnes Park Extension or halfway across Springwell. No restarting to test: stop once safe, then turn it off. More of that is pulled through with each start.
Springwell lies under 5 miles from the Western Highway; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.
A quick hop across Springwell to the car park by St Mary's & St Peter's Church is one matter; driving for Sunderland, under 3 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.
Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted quickly.
Springwell: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel
The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near The Immaculate Heart of Mary, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Springwell, and the van travels to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, since those replies settle this work.
Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing your vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, swapped. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, provided the motor has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Finally, the fuel system is primed with new diesel. Whether it's a parking space outside Sunderland or a driveway in Springwell, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off. It's tested on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before our engineers go. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Springwell?
There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Independent Methodist Church, Bethany Memorial.
That's why every call from Springwell starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run. Given them, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.
Before anyone sets off, you hear the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
