AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in St Anns? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in St Anns, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has been run. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

St Anns, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, which stops someone switching the electrics on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NG3 1, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the car even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Wadhurst Gardens.
  • Emptying the tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

The attendants on duty at any St Anns filling station — the Shell among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its supply from. A car topped up on a drive in Alexandra Park overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the motor turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. A car left sitting around St Anns with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Valero, and this issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of the diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Mapperley Park or the centre of St Anns alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Nottinghamshire the car is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around St Anns?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Mostly it is not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Sycamore Academy. Close to Thomas Close, someone pours a container in at home in the evening. Otherwise, in dim light outside The Bath Inn, the vehicle is refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it most. Same mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you are around St Anns or the rest of Nottinghamshire.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around St Anns?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Robin Hood Chase Park or halfway across St Anns. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

St Anns sits under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Hopping across St Anns to the car park by St Ann with Emmanuel is one matter; heading for Nottingham, under a mile away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where your car has ended up. When it's noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in St Anns?

Wherever it has stopped in St Anns — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a street by The Chase Neighbourhood Centre — our van comes to your car. Three replies shape the job, and so first we ask which fluid went in, about the amount, plus whether your engine has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is drained, right there. A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not wash away on its own. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The final step is to prime your system on clean diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, outside Nottingham or on a drive around St Anns. Our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around St Anns

Not one flat price could be honest, because each job differs. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Mowbray Court.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from St Anns begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus if the engine ran. With those replies, the range shrinks to one fixed number.

The price is quoted on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
