St Margarets: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition too. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. The harm starts once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in St Margarets. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, St Margarets: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • Remove your keys, and that prevents someone switching the electrics on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians can see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SG12 8, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Do not:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: your engine stays off.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Even a short way down Station Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

At a forecourt in St Margarets, whether it is the Gulf or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car away from the pump. On that drive, the car stays exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — quite unlike fuel. The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. A car filled on a drive in Woollensbrook overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when your engine turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches till it is cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Overnight, a car sitting around St Margarets with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only in that tank, nothing changes. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in St Margarets

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and the problem is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in your tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it separates again — and the next tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of St Margarets or out in Rye Park, costs more than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there's good news. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Hertfordshire your car is sitting.

St Margarets: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside St Andrew's Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near Amwell Lane. Else, after dark outside The Jolly Fisherman, your vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented motors, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it the most. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever in St Margarets or the remainder of Hertfordshire you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in St Margarets?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may notice your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from St Margarets Community Wood or halfway across St Margarets. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M11, under 10 miles from St Margarets, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across St Margarets to the car park by St Mary the Virgin is a very different job from a run towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been running. Lasting damage is very unusual if it is caught quickly.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around St Margarets: what it takes

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in St Margarets: a side street near St Margaretsbury Sports & Social Club, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid went in, about how much, plus whether your engine has been run: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at St Margarets (Herts) or on a drive in St Margarets. It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave. As the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in St Margarets

Because the callouts differ, a single figure would not be fair. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Stanstead Abbots Parish Hall.

Ahead of any figure, not after, each call from St Margarets begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if the engine ran. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
