Stepney: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

One fact counts most once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and it is whether your motor has run since. Over in Inglemire or here in Stepney, an unrun engine should remain that way. Leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103; it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Stepney. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. A bigger job, then, yet the same first move.

Further down: the situations we see, wherever around East Riding of Yorkshire. Choose yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Stepney forecourt

The cap you opened was the wrong one — and you only spot it as you are standing at the petrol pump, bottle or the nozzle in your hand. It could be the JET, or perhaps the BP, or a different station in Stepney.

Put simply: no better place exists to discover it. Only that tank has AdBlue; not one component beyond it has taken any in.

Clearing the petrol pump is no excuse to start it — so do not get back in. Ask the staff to help you roll your car into a parking bay, keep the receipt or the bottle, then phone us from the forecourt. Emptying it right at the pump is possible when it can't be shifted, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

Stepney, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Days had gone by with the warning light on. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the driveway, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look again at the cap. Houses just off Westbourne Avenue are hit as much as everywhere else.

Meaning? As long as your car hasn't been driven since, it's close to the pump case. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of the tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Your move: the keys indoors, so no one drives the car off first thing. After that, ring. Sculcoates or Stepney: wherever your driveway is, that's where it gets cleared. Night-time clears outside a house are fine: the pumps are low-noise.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Stepney

Stepney: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

Rough running, smoke, falling power or a glowing dashboard arrived a mile or two beyond the fill. Maybe it was on Pearson Park, maybe on the way out towards Kingston upon Hull, under 3 miles away.

The upshot: the system has pulled AdBlue through by now. It's been through the fuel filter and the fuel lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors. Each restart, like every mile, carries it deeper.

What to do: pull over where it is safe and switch off. On the M180, under 15 miles from Stepney, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Don't restart it to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Roughly what distance had it gone? Tell us when you call.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

Seven days back, the car was unknown to you. On your own car, AdBlue is absent or somewhere else. On this one, the inlet is right next to the diesel inlet — a surprise to you. It can happen to anyone, anywhere in East Riding of Yorkshire.

In short: an extra stage on top of the situations above, and those depend on if it has run. The owner frequently has to approve the work, under plenty of hire and company contracts.

Next: phone the rental company or the fleet manager first, and then us — settling it before we arrive is faster. Stuck by Whispering Sweet Nothings or outside Hull until someone replies, the car stays switched off the whole time.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, in Stepney

"I think so" is sometimes the most honest as it gets. Lighter, that bottle; a trace of ammonia round the filler; a hazy recollection of the cap. Sound familiar? The gates of Pearson Primary School in a hurry, say, or someone's drive out in Kingston upon Hull.

Meaning? Spills outside the filler never touch your motor at all. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. Any AdBlue in the tank would be pulled in by starting the vehicle, and the start would not settle which it is in any case.

Do this: act as though it did, and don't start your engine. Phone with what you saw: we'd rather confirm a tank free of AdBlue than empty one after your engine has been run.

The common ground in every Stepney AdBlue drain

Each case has the same start to the work. Our technicians come to your car, whether it is at a forecourt, a drive, the car park at Dukes or a side street near Queen Victoria, and ask three things: what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run. Those answers decide the work, and you get our quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not rinse out on its own. Then is your filter — flushed, or replaced where necessary — then clean diesel, and a test of the car. Never started? Then roughly half an hour once we are there covers most jobs.

Last, our technicians start the car. Our technicians check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we go. The whole job is done where your car is, and when it's noticed early, long-term damage is very unusual. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, nothing upfront. It is worth knowing: lots of insurers offer misfuelling cover, so a quick look at your documents as you wait is worthwhile.

AdBlue drains round Stepney and across East Riding of Yorkshire

Stepney is a residential suburb, and the same teams that cover it work the places near it too, Newland and Newland Park among them, across the HU postcode area. The whereabouts is clearest from a postcode that starts HU5 3.

No moving is required, be it parked centrally in Stepney or in a lay-by en route to Pearson Park, and so leave it where it is. Our technicians drain it where it is. If you are somewhere hard to describe, near Artlink Centre for Community Arts or close to a boundary, ring and ask instead of guessing.
