AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stisted? Don't Start It
If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your motor off then keep your ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble begins once it's pulled through the pump — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Stisted, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.
Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stisted
To do:
- Pull the keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.
- Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.
- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting CM77 8, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.
Do not:
- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
- Even a short stretch down The Street is too far to drive the vehicle.
- Beside the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.
Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Stisted forecourt you are on, the BP or any other. At your own drive, do not move it at all.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. From a separate reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, treating what the engine lets out. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.
Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — quite different from fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the same place the pickup draws from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Bradwell last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through if your motor runs, before any diesel at all.
From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; and, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a vehicle sitting in Stisted. Just in your tank, it stays the same. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.
Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?
Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a fault of thin fuel. Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless for now; using your engine is the damage.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. Whether your car is in High Garrett or the centre of Stisted, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.
The same good news holds as with petrol. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Essex your car is standing.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stisted: how it ends up there
After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; many designs invite it. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.
The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Stisted Church of England Primary Academy the top-up is hurried. Close to Rectory Road, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Onley Arms.
It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical slip, an identical first step — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Stisted or the remainder of Essex.
Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stisted?
Then the AdBlue has left your tank. With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.
Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Playing Fields, say, or part way across Stisted. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.
Exit the M11, under 25 miles from Stisted, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.
How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Stisted to the car park by All Saints, Stisted is a very different job from a run towards Colchester, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.
Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been run. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is caught early.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Stisted?
A street beside Stisted Hall, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has stopped around Stisted, our technicians travel to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if your engine has run, because those answers settle this work.
Next, emptying your tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.
The final step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, by Braintree Freeport or on a drive around Stisted. Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. Since the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Stisted
Because the callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Glebe House.
Before any figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Stisted begins with three checks: the liquid, the amount, and whether it ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.
Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your policy while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
In Stisted and still alongside your car?
Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to not touch it. Keys out, engine off, ignition off. Say it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Stisted or anywhere in Essex.
