AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Stoke DAbernon? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble starts once it is pulled through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully flushed where the car stands in Stoke DAbernon. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Stoke DAbernon, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting KT11 3, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Never:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition your car.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is pointless.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Winston Drive.
  • By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

At a forecourt in Stoke DAbernon, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. On the drive, the car stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Isle of Wight last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it's removed from the system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow channels. A car left standing around Stoke DAbernon with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Stoke DAbernon

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have an issue of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, and so watering it can't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Oxshott or the heart of Stoke DAbernon alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Surrey your car is standing.

Stoke DAbernon: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Usually it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside St Matthew's CofE Aided Infant School, Cobham. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Station Road. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside The Old Plough.

The least known vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other motor in a family with one of each fuel types. Wherever you're around Stoke DAbernon or the rest of Surrey, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Stoke DAbernon: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. It's been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Stoke D’Abernon Recreation Ground, perhaps, or part way across Stoke DAbernon. No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then switch it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Stoke DAbernon sits under a mile from the M25; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Stoke DAbernon to the car park by Stoke D'Abernon Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

Stoke DAbernon: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a road near Chelsea Football Club Training Ground, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Stoke DAbernon, and the van travels to it. Which fluid was put in, roughly the quantity, and if the motor has been run: our engineers ask first, because those shape the work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't wash away by itself. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Priming the system with clean diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Cobham & Stoke Dabernon or on a driveway in Stoke DAbernon. The check before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Stoke DAbernon

Each job is different, so not one single quote would be honest. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight spot behind Cobham United Reformed Church.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and whether it ran: each Stoke DAbernon call opens with precisely those, ahead of any figure, never after. When they are known, a range turns into one fixed number.
