AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stonequarry? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition as well. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. The harm starts once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. In Stonequarry, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Stonequarry, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys away.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the amount, so don't bin it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting RH19 3, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't thin it.
  • Even a short stretch up Woodlands Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Moving your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Stonequarry forecourt you're on, the JET included. On that drive, the vehicle stays exactly where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes. No part in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to travel that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from. A motor filled on a driveway in Baldwins Hill yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there. Overnight, a vehicle parked in Stonequarry with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it's only in your tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a separate kind of damage.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Esso. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Hammerwood or the middle of Stonequarry.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere around West Sussex the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stonequarry: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs allow it. Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The refill gets rushed outside Blackwell Primary School, because the dash lit up with a warning as the children were dropped off. Near Wilderwick Road, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles get it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels. Keep it off: that's the first response to the same slip, wherever around Stonequarry or the rest of West Sussex you happen to be.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stonequarry?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Swites Wood, perhaps, or part way across Stonequarry. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M23, under 10 miles from Stonequarry, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading for Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Stonequarry to the car park by Meridian Hall. Let us know about how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been run, and we do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it's caught early.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Stonequarry: what it takes

A road by East Grinstead WWII Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the car has stopped around Stonequarry, our engineers travel to it. Three replies decide the job, so first our engineers ask which fluid went in, about what quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since residue won't wash away unaided. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Bleeding the system with clean diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at Dormans or on a drive in Stonequarry. Before leaving, our engineers check it's running properly with fresh diesel in. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Stonequarry

Since the jobs differ, a single figure wouldn't be fair. What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Jubilee Community Center Food Bank.

For that reason, every call from Stonequarry opens by asking the same trio — what went in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of any quote. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before a van heads out, you hear our price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
