Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stoney Middleton

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes once your pump starts pulling it. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands around Stoney Middleton. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Stoney Middleton: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take the keys out.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting S32 4, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Denman Crescent.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Stoney Middleton filling station — the BP among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same spot the pickup sucks from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Calver last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

After it's drawn in, the damage takes two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it is cleared from your system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. By daybreak, a car parked around Stoney Middleton with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it is only inside the tank, it doesn't. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second kind of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Texaco. Blended into the diesel and left still, it's harmless for now; using your engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Froggatt or the heart of Stoney Middleton equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Derbyshire the vehicle is standing.

Stoney Middleton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one intends it. Usually it's never the filling station: a driver buys a container heading home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Stoney Middleton CofE (C) Primary School the top-up is rushed. A driver pours the bottle in at home, just off A623, as the day ends. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Moon Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company motor, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuel types — the cars people know least. Wherever you're around Stoney Middleton or the remainder of Derbyshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stoney Middleton?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. It's been sucked through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps midway across Stoney Middleton or coming back from Bath Gardens. No restarting to check: pull over once safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M1, under 15 miles from Stoney Middleton, at the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so driving for Sheffield, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Stoney Middleton to the car park by St Martin. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where your car has ended up, and once the motor has run there is more of it. Spotted early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Stoney Middleton: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car remains put, whether that's a street beside Boundary Stone, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Stoney Middleton, and the van comes to it. Which fluid was put in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the motor has been run: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since residue won't flush away unaided. A test of the vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel is added and your filter is flushed or, where necessary, swapped. If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel. Whether it is a parking space at Grindleford or a driveway around Stoney Middleton, that is where our technicians start the car and you head off. We check it runs smoothly on new diesel before we go. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

A mobile service suits Stoney Middleton, a village: there's no need to bring the car to us, since our engineers empty it there, on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stoney Middleton: the cost of fixing it

Because the jobs differ, a flat price would not be honest. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Riley Graves.

With that reason, every enquiry from Stoney Middleton opens by asking the identical trio — what was put in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of any figure. When those are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear the price by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. As our engineer is travelling, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
