AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Stoneyfield? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully rinsed where the car sits around Stoneyfield. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Stoneyfield, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, and that stops someone turning the electrics on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and we will know.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a OL11 1 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, so leave it off.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's pointless.
  • Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along Thornton Street.
  • Beside the road, do not attempt emptying it on your own.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Stoneyfield forecourt you are on, the Shell or any other. On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same spot the intake draws from. A car filled on a drive in Kirkholt overnight and not started since is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when the motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside. A vehicle left standing around Stoneyfield with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Stoneyfield

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main issue. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting inside the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be watered down, since it splits back out — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Stoneyfield or out in Rochdale, costs more than almost any other mistake.

As with petrol, there's good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester your car is standing.

Stoneyfield: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. A container bought when heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Ashfield Valley Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped in. Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off Ashfield Road, as the day ends. Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Sandbrook.

Rented vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known cars see it the most. Keep it switched off: that is the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere in Stoneyfield or the rest of Greater Manchester you are.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stoneyfield?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. The filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Mandale Park, perhaps, or midway across Stoneyfield. No restarting to check: pull over once it is safe, then switch everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A627(M), under a mile from Stoneyfield, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Stoneyfield to the car park by St Luke is a very different job from a run towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it is noticed quickly.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Stoneyfield: what it takes

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Stoneyfield: a side street near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job depends on three answers, and our technicians ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and if the motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at Rochdale or on a drive in Stoneyfield. Before leaving, our engineers check it is running smoothly with fresh diesel in. Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Stoneyfield

No flat price would be fair, since each job differs. What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Odeon.

Which fluid went in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Stoneyfield enquiry opens with exactly those, before a figure, never after. Their replies narrow a range right down to one number.

Before a van heads out, you are told our price by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
