Stowmarket: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave the ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only starts when your pump begins pulling it. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Stowmarket. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stowmarket: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so don't bin it out.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting IP14 1, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Do not do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine stays off.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Station Road West.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

The attendants working at any Stowmarket filling station — the Esso among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask. At home, your car stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its fuel from. When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is why a car topped up in Chilton Leys last night and never started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody touches the key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it's cleared from the system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. A vehicle left sitting in Stowmarket with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, which is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Stowmarket

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have a fault of thin fuel. No damage comes while it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, so watering it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Onehouse or the centre of Stowmarket equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever across Suffolk your car has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Stowmarket

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it is never the filling station: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Abbot's Hall Community Primary School the top-up is hurried. Near Gipping Way, a driver tips a container in at home in the evening. Else, after dark outside The Queens Head, your car is refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars see it most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the other motor of a family with both fuels. Wherever you're in Stowmarket or the remainder of Suffolk, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Stowmarket?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Through the filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Maybe coming back from The Walled Garden, or part way across Stowmarket, the engine may run rough, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or stall. No restarting to test: stop once safe, then switch it off. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Stowmarket sits under 50 miles from the M11; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Stowmarket to the car park by St. Peter and St. Mary Church is a very different job from a run towards Colchester, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Long-term damage is very rare if it is caught early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Stowmarket?

A road by Stowmarket Library, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever the car has come to rest around Stowmarket, our engineers come to it. What got in, about the quantity, plus whether the motor has been run: our technicians ask first, since those decide the job.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue won't flush out by itself. A test of the car comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where necessary, replaced. Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. You drive off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Stowmarket or in a bay at the nearest station. The test before our technicians head off is that it runs properly on clean diesel. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

Stowmarket and Suffolk: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Stowmarket are passed to vans that serve the places around it — Combs Ford, Stowupland as well as Thorney Green — and most of Suffolk beyond, across IP postcodes. If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Stowmarket, a riverside town, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Stowmarket?

Not one flat price could be honest, because each job is different. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind St Peter's Hall.

What got in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: every Stowmarket call opens with precisely those, before a quote, never after. With them, a range shrinks to one firm number.

Our price is given on the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

In Stowmarket and still beside the vehicle?

Then, the best thing to do with your car is to not touch it. Keys out; engine and ignition off. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Stowmarket or anywhere in Suffolk, after you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran.
