Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Strawberry Hill and Purston Jaglin carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler. Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together behind one flap. Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, again and again. The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Strawberry Hill: how it takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Tall Trees Drive before work, or in the car park outside Featherstone Working Mens Club on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on. North Featherstone or the heart of Strawberry Hill: it takes the same few seconds in both.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Strawberry Hill

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Strawberry Hill or a driveway over in Snydale. A few seconds, no more.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.
  • On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Featherstone, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is around West Yorkshire — a simple routine to follow.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Vicarage Gardens.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop. Don't carry on to stage five.

Strawberry Hill: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Gulf or the BP, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Strawberry Hill.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. Leave the M62 — under 3 miles out of Strawberry Hill — at the next exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Strawberry Hill.

Our arrival in Strawberry Hill, and what happens next

The van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near All Saints Church, or outside Featherstone North Featherstone Junior and Infant School. Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask. During the phone call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears out unaided, however long it is left. After the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested. Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
