Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stukeley

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep your motor off and keep your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump starts pulling it. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully purged where your car sits around Stukeley. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Stukeley: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, which prevents anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't bin it away.
  • Give us a postcode starting PE29 6, or whatever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift your car.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so leave it off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down St Margarets Way.
  • Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Stukeley forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included. On the drive, the vehicle stays exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Green End overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be first through if the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Stukeley makes it worse. Inside the tank only, time costs nothing. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Shell, and this issue is diluted fuel. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting inside the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Newtown or the middle of Stukeley.

As with petrol, there's good news. Anywhere around Cambridgeshire your car has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stukeley: how it ends up there

Many vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody intends it. Mostly it's not the forecourt: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Stukeley Meadows Primary School. After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Stukeley Road. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the car after dark, parked in the car park by The George Hotel.

Hired cars, brand-new motors, fleet cars, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars get it the most. Wherever you are in Stukeley or the remainder of Cambridgeshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Stukeley?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Through your filter, along the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Long Moor Balk or halfway across Stukeley. Once safe, pull over and switch it off — without turning it on again to test. Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the A1(M), under 3 miles from Stukeley, at the next junction and park safely, rather than carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That is why a hop across Stukeley to park near Huntingdon Leisure Centre and a drive of under 25 miles towards Peterborough are very different jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Permanent damage is very rare if it is spotted soon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Stukeley: what it takes

A road by Huntingdon Youth, Child and Family Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Stukeley, we come to it. Three replies decide the job, and so first our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, plus whether the motor has run.

Then your tank is emptied where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not clear out on its own. Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a check of the car. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if the motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel. You set off as soon as our technicians have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Stukeley or in a bay outside Huntingdon. Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running correctly with fresh diesel in. Our technicians do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Stukeley and Cambridgeshire

Stukeley: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Three things shift the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Huntingdon Community Centre.

That is why every call from Stukeley starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
