Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sunderland

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep the ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Sunderland. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Sunderland: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting SR2 7, or whatever street is closest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: your engine stays off.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Cowan Terrace.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Sunderland forecourt you are on, the Shell included. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. No part in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — quite different from fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A car filled on a driveway in Bishopwearmouth overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there. It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. A car left sitting in Sunderland with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Sunderland

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the main issue. Damage only comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Whether the vehicle sits in Hendon or the heart of Sunderland, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue waits only in your tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever the car has come to rest around Tyne and Wear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Sunderland

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Hudson Road Primary School the refill is rushed. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Stockton Road. Another version: dim light, the car park by Chaplin's, and someone using that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere in Tyne and Wear, Sunderland included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Sunderland?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Mowbray Park or halfway across Sunderland. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the A194(M), under 10 miles from Sunderland, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Sunderland to park near West Park Church and a drive of under 15 miles for Newcastle upon Tyne are such different jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been running. Lasting damage is very rare if it is caught soon.

Sunderland: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest in Sunderland — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Trinity Church — our van comes to your car. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, since those replies determine this work.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since residue won't flush away unaided. A test of your car follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Last, the system is primed with clean diesel. You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Sunderland or in a space at the nearest station. The check before we head off is that it runs properly on new diesel. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Tyne and Wear, Sunderland included

AdBlue jobs around Sunderland go to teams that serve the places near it — Thornhill Cresecent, Humbledon View plus Ashbrooke — and most of Tyne and Wear further out, across SR postcodes. Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

Sunderland is a coastal city, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Sunderland: the cost of fixing it

Because the callouts differ, a single price wouldn't be honest. The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Jack Crawford.

What went in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Sunderland call opens with exactly that, before any quote, not afterwards. Those replies shrink a range right down to one figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
