AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Swain House? Don't Start It
Motor off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once your pump begins drawing it. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Swain House. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
What to do straight away, Swain House: AdBlue in the diesel tank
Do:
- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting BD2 1, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.
Don't do these:
- Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.
- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along Radcliffe Avenue.
- Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.
Moving the car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Swain House forecourt you are on, the Morrisons included. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was intended to go that way.
It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the same spot the intake draws from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Eccleshill last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.
Once it is sucked in, the damage takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Swain House makes it worse. In your tank only, waiting does nothing. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse
A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your engine on it.
AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so watering it won't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Springfield or the heart of Swain House alike.
The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in West Yorkshire the vehicle sits.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Swain House?
Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may appear the same. Nobody means it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.
It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Swain House Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. Someone pours the container in at home, right off Swain House Crescent, as the day ends. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Lane Ends, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.
It happens most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are in Swain House or the rest of West Yorkshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.
Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Swain House?
Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.
Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might show up, maybe midway across Swain House or returning from Wrose Play & Recreational Ground. When safe, stop and turn it off — with no restarting to see. Every start pulls more of that through.
Exit the M606, under 5 miles from Swain House, at the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.
How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Swain House to the car park by Saint Cuthbert's is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.
There's more to flush once the motor has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is spotted soon.
What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Swain House
Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Swain House: a side street near Goals Soccer Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has been run, since those answers decide the work.
Then that tank is emptied where the vehicle sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't wash out by itself. Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.
Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step. You drive off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Swain House or in a space outside Frizinghall. Before leaving, our engineers make sure it's running properly with new diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

Swain House: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix
Because the jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be honest. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
That's why every call from Swain House starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run. With those replies, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.
Before anyone heads out, you hear the quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
