AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Swan Village: What Now?

Has the engine turned over since the AdBlue went in? That one point settles almost everything else from here. Wherever the car is — New Town, Swan Village — don't run an engine that hasn't been started yet. Normally this is emptying and properly rinsing it right there around Swan Village — and so leave your ignition and motor off and ring 0333 366 0103. Stop the minute it is safe then turn off, if it has already run. A larger job, yes, but the same opening move.

Below: the cases our technicians meet, wherever around West Midlands. Pick yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Swan Village forecourt

Picture it: stood by the pump, holding the nozzle, you realise the filler you opened was not the correct one. It might be the BP, or perhaps the Shell, or another station around Swan Village.

In short: no better spot to be to discover it. The AdBlue is inside your tank and nowhere else. Nothing has drawn it in.

Clearing the petrol pump is no reason to run it — so do not get back in. Ask the attendants to help you roll your car into a parking space, keep the receipt or the bottle, and call us from the forecourt. If it can't be shifted, it can be emptied at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt.

AdBlue in the diesel tank on a Swan Village drive?

On the dash, a reminder had shown all week. Only at the recycling bin, the empty container in hand, did you glance back at the cap you'd used on the driveway. It takes place on driveways just off Irvan Avenue as often as anywhere.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Next: prevent an early drive by keeping your keys in the house, then phone us. Your drive is where it is drained, whether in Swan Village or Ryders Green. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Drove off with AdBlue in a diesel around Swan Village?

Filled up, pulled away, and soon the motor was running unevenly, smoking, down on power, or flashing up the dash. Maybe it was on Steel Avenue, maybe on the way out towards Birmingham, under 10 miles away.

In short: the AdBlue has been pulled into the system. Distance decides how far it gets: filter and lines to begin with, then the high-pressure pump and every injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

What to do: pull over where it's safe to do so and switch off. On the M5, under 3 miles from Swan Village, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Do not restart the car to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Call, and say how far your vehicle went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company cars

You have only driven this car a week. Your own car either has no AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, so no one warned you the AdBlue inlet sits just next to your diesel. Wherever you are around West Midlands, every driver could slip up.

The point: exactly as above, divided by whether it ran, only with an added stage. Work on the vehicle frequently requires the owner's go-ahead under rental or company agreements.

Sorting it before the van arrives is faster, so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. If you are stuck in the car park at Sandwell & Dudley, or by Barnardos - West Bromwich Central Family Hub, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

Unsure about AdBlue in your diesel tank around Swan Village?

"I think so" is sometimes the most honest answer there is. What cap was taken off, you can't say; but the bottle feels lighter than expected, and ammonia hangs by your filler. Perhaps it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Ryders Green Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Guns Village.

The upshot: the motor isn't harmed by a little AdBlue splashed on the outside. Inside your diesel tank, by contrast, AdBlue harms it. Firing up the car won't tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in your tank it would draw it in.

What to do: treat it as if it was put in. Don't crank it. Checking a tank that turns out free of AdBlue beats emptying one after it has been run — so ring and tell us what you saw.

Swan Village: what every AdBlue drain has in common

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Our engineers come to the car, whether it's on a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside The Halfway House or a side street close to Living Hope Grace & Truth Church, and ask three things: what went in, about how much, and if the motor has been run. Answers shape the work; the price comes by phone whilst no one has set off yet.

A thorough flush comes after this drain. With petrol it is standard; with AdBlue it is crucial, because crystals build up and some metals are attacked, and none of that washes away unaided. Last are the filter, cleaned or renewed as needed; fresh diesel; and a check of the car. The majority of unstarted vehicles are a half-hour job after the moment our engineers arrive.

The final step is firing it up. Our test that it runs properly on new diesel comes before our technicians go. Permanent damage is very rare when it is spotted early, and the whole job is done where the vehicle is. Nothing is taken upfront, settlement is made on the day, and you get what your insurer asks for: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
