Taddington: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits around Taddington, is usually what it takes when found before the motor runs. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels in Blackwell, like those in Taddington, run on two liquids; the motor takes only the diesel. Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, again and again. The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Taddington: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Main Road, perhaps at Queens Arms on the way home after work.

New-to-you motors are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip begins, no part halts it. Whether it happens in Priestcliffe or the middle of Taddington, it is the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Taddington

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Taddington forecourt or a drive over in Litton Mill, take a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • On many cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Buxton? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Derbyshire that is.

  • Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside School Lane at the roadside.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using its own spout.
  • Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.

Taddington: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of it: the motor remains unstarted. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else. Your own drive in Taddington is the place it stays.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off. The next junction is where to leave when you are on the M67, under 25 miles from Taddington. Distance matters — a short hop across Taddington is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Sheffield — so say roughly how far it went.

Taddington: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it by Taddington and Priestcliffe School, near St Michael & All Angels or on your own drive, our van comes to it. What fluid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and quote. No one sets off before you have heard the quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. After your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle is tested. Next we start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

AdBlue drains around Taddington, and Derbyshire beyond

Taddington is a rural village, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Priestcliffe Ditch and Brushfield among them, across the SK postcode area. A postcode starting SK17 9 gets our van to you fastest.

Moving your car isn't necessary. We drain it where it is — a side street close to The Bramwell Memorial Institute, a lay-by on the way to Priestcliffe Lees SSSI, a drive. If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Five Wells, ring and ask instead of guessing.
