Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tagg Wood: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103. Around Tagg Wood, catching it before the engine runs usually leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads about Tagg Wood and Nuttall carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use. It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

Tagg Wood: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Hillside Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Masons Arms.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it. It's seconds, be it out in Hazelhurst or bang in the centre of Tagg Wood.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Carr or a forecourt in Tagg Wood.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Entwistle? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever in Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Mary Street.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read the cap.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Skip stage five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tagg Wood?

Do not start your motor: that's how the short order of things starts. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the EG On the Move or the Esso, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Tagg Wood.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. On the M66, under a mile from Tagg Wood, that means the next junction. A short hop across Tagg Wood is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

What happens when our technicians arrive around Tagg Wood

Wherever the car has stopped, whether outside Hazlehurst Primary Academy, near St. Andrews Church or on your own drive, the van travels to it. The answers settle this work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run. No one sets off until you've heard our price by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system. More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left. Once your filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally your car gets tested. Next our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Your car doesn't need to move. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Emmanuel, a lay-by on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, a driveway. Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Joseph's.
