Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Talbot Village

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition too. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system draws it in. In Talbot Village, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Talbot Village: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pocket the keys, which prevents anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it away.
  • Tell us a postcode starting BH12 5, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van finds you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Never do these:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up University Roundabout.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

Rolling your car off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Talbot Village forecourt you're on, the Sainsbury's or any other. At your own drive, don't move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Talbot Woods last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it is removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Talbot Village leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, time costs nothing. Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and this problem is diluted fuel. Blended into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; using your engine is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Talbot Village or out in Turbary Common, does more harm than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever across Dorset your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Talbot Village?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it's never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. Rushing, outside St Mark's Church of England Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle. A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off Wallisdown Road, as the day ends. Otherwise, after dark outside Kings Arms, the vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the other car in a family with both fuel types. Wherever around Dorset, Talbot Village as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

Talbot Village: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might appear, maybe midway across Talbot Village or coming back from Talbot Woods. No restarting to test: pull over once safe, then switch everything off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M27, under 25 miles from Talbot Village, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving for Salisbury, under 25 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Talbot Village to the car park by Sport BU. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. If it's spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Talbot Village: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road by St Marks Church, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere your car has come to rest around Talbot Village, we travel to it. The work depends on three answers, and our technicians ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not clear out on its own. A test of the vehicle comes last, after clean diesel goes in and the filter gets flushed or, if needed, swapped. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Talbot Village or in a bay by Branksome. It is checked on clean diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians go. Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

Talbot Village and Dorset: AdBlue drains across the area

Talbot Heath, Columbia Farm and Ensbury Park are among the towns near Talbot Village that the same vans serve, together with much of Dorset beyond, throughout the BH postcode area. Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

Talbot Village is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

Talbot Village: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a flat figure would not be honest. Three things change the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Ensbury Park Community Centre.

What got in, how much, and whether the engine ran: each Talbot Village enquiry opens with precisely those, ahead of a figure, never after. When those are known, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
