AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Talwrn? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when your pump starts drawing it. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully rinsed where the car stands around Talwrn. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Talwrn, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Give us a postcode starting LL11 3, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Do not:

  • Shifting your car just a short way is no reason to start your engine.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch down Heol Llewelyn.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

On a forecourt around Talwrn, whether it's the Asda or another one, ask the staff to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the fumes. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Denser than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same spot the pickup sucks from. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in New Brighton last night and never started stays the straightforward one, as long as no one touches the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. A motor left standing in Talwrn with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water content damages them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Sainsbury's. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside that tank, it causes none.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the next fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Talwrn or out in Minera, costs more than almost any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside your tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere your car has stopped around Wrexham.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Talwrn: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it's never the forecourt: someone buys a container heading home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off Cae Glas, as the day ends. Else, in dim light by Five Crosses Inn, the vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels — the vehicles people know the least. Leave it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, wherever around Talwrn or the rest of Wrexham you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Talwrn, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through the filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Memorial Park or halfway across Talwrn. When you safely can, stop then turn everything off — with no restarting to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M53, under 15 miles from Talwrn, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, so driving towards Wrexham, under 5 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Talwrn to the car park by The Salvation Army - Coedpoeth. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been running. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Talwrn

The car stays where it is, whether that is a street beside Coedpoeth Parish Hall, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Talwrn, and our van comes to it. The work rests on three replies, and our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then the tank is cleared where the car sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear away by itself. Next, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of the car. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if the engine has not run. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Lastly, the system is bled with new diesel. At that point we start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Gwersyllt or a driveway around Talwrn. The test before our engineers leave is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Talwrn

Because each jobs vary, a flat figure would not be honest. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Coedpoeth War Memorial.

Before any figure, never afterwards, every call from Talwrn opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, and whether the engine ran. Those replies shrink a range down to a single figure.

Our price is given on the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
